Casa Piedra

Casa Piedra Overnight

This program will take you to see and learn more about the area in the vicinity of Boquillas. Our guests arrive at the Port of Entry at 9

am, then take the ferry boat across the Rio Grande and meet the Boquillas Adventures guides. On the Mexican shore, guests receive an orientation then board our vehicle to drive to Las Norias, a typical village of Northern Mexico where the adventure begins. Visitors will learn how a high quality wax is extracted from the native Candelilla plant (Euphorbia antisyphilitica). The impoverished community of Las Norias has survived by wax making since mining activity ceased. The down side of this practice is that the Candelilla population is slow to recover after harvest, leading to its scarcity almost to extinction. Boquillas Adventures is trying to bring a tourism based economy to the area as an alternative to extractive processes, and limit wax production to small scale demonstrations of this historic activity. Our goal is to engender a culture of environmental restoration through sustainable tourism activities.

After the village tour is concluded, we will drive to the nearby village of Jaboncillos where lunch will be served by a local family. After lunch, we will be in route to our final destination: Casa Piedra in San Jose de las Piedras. There we will install ourselves in camp and cabins and begin our tour of the archeological site, viewing the extensive pictographs left by ancient inhabitants of this location.

After our site tour, dinner will be served by our host family.

After breakfast on day 2, we visit the community of San Miguel, where there is a small museum of paleontology. Afterwards we return to Boquillas for lunch and where we will have time to tour town and shop for arts and crafts. At 3:30 pm we return to

the river to cross over before the Port of Entry closes at 4 pm.

Cost for the tour is $295 per person plus applicable taxes, with a $100 deposit to reserve space. Upon receipt of deposit, you will get a confirmation by email along with a check list for what to bring and how to prepare.
